Ammonia is a pungent smelling, colourless gas. Its main source is livestock farming in agriculture. It escapes mainly in the barn and during storage and spreading of farmyard manure. A part also comes from traffic. High concentrations are acutely toxic to plants, animals and humans. Ammonia is a precursor substance for the formation of fine dust and contributes to the acidification and over-fertilisation of soils. In waters, ammonia is toxic to fish.
