An accident is registered when the insurance company receives the accident report. The case is then acknowledged or rejected. Since the accident report takes some time, the year of the accident and the year of registration are not identical in all cases. Cases are reported by registration year.

Since 2015, the provisions of the individual insurance companies have been added together. In previous years, the provisions for all insurance lines were recalculated in total, i.e. instead of the eight insurance providers, a theoretically constructed, large insurance company formed the basis. The risks of the individual insurance companies were thus grouped in a single pool and could be covered with fewer provisions due to the combined insurance volume. For this reason, the provisions were reported lower than they actually were before 2015.

The Case Mix Index describes the overall severity of the billed treatment cases of a hospital. It is the sum of the cost weights of the cases of a hospital. If you divide the Case Mix by the number of cases, the Case Mix Index (CMI) is obtained, i.e. the average severity of hospital cases. The CMI is calculated annually for each hospital that bills according to the Swiss Diagnosis Related Groups (SwissDRG) tariff system.
